President’s Column
For The PGPSRA Website
October, 2010 issue

If you failed to attend the General Membership Meeting on September 22nd at PGCEA, you missed a great event – enthusiasm, a little business and a lot of fun definitely were the order of the day.

On September 14, primary election day, the voters of Prince George’s County expressed their desires for the next four years.  To highlight three races, let me begin with Rushern Baker.  The citizens selected him as the Democratic Party nominee for County Executive.  Rushern represented his district in the House of Delegates from 1994 – 2003 and chaired the county delegation from 1999 – 2003.  A friend of educators and a person of high integrity and intelligence and with a warm and friendly manner, Rushern will be a welcome addition in Upper Marlboro.

Joanne C. Benson, a retired educator who dedicated her career to bettering the education of children in the Prince George’s County Public Schools is well known by most retired educators in Prince George’s County and is a member of our association.  Joanne began her service in the Maryland House of Delegates in 1991 and has been an outspoken advocate for children, her constituents and human and civil rights for all.  As the Democratic Party nominee for the state Senate from District 24, we look forward to working with her in the years ahead.

The apparent Prince George’s County Sheriff-elect, Melvin High, spoke recently to our members at the General Membership Meeting at PGCEA.  Mr. High described his vision of a better quality of life for the citizens of our county and what he sees as necessary steps to make his vision a reality.  Sheriff-elect High was enthusiastically greeted by his numerous friends in the audience.

Our next General Membership Meeting is one you won’t want to miss!  The meeting will be at the Greenbelt American Legion Post #136, 6900 Greenbelt Road, in Greenbelt on Thursday, November 18th.  Our guest speaker will be our friend and Maryland State Senator-Elect, Joanne C. Benson from Legislative District 24. With her background and experience, we anticipate that Joanne’s reflections on the November 2nd election and the upcoming legislative session will be unusually perceptive.  We look forward to seeing Joanne and hearing her remarks in November.

I can’t wait to see all of you on November 18th!

Carl Lancaster
President

(NOTE: the meeting is on Thursday, November 18 rather than Wednesday, November 24 because of Thanksgiving Day and the number of our members who probably will be traveling over Thanksgiving.)
