President’s Remarks
For PGPSRA Website
August, 2010

Welcome to the Prince George’s Public School Retirees Association website.  Here you will find information about PGPSRA, an organization composed solely of retirees from the Prince George’s County Public Schools.

I wish to thank Bonnie Brose for her hard work and leadership during her term as president of PGPSRA and to wish her well as the new president of the Maryland Retired School Personnel Association.  Bonnie was an eager advocate for our members and she will be an invaluable asset to MRSPA in the years ahead, we will miss her ever-present smile and her calm leadership at PGPSRA.

I began a two-year term as president on July 1 and the Board members and I have been at work planning for the year ahead.

In the coming months PGPSRA will confront and challenge legislation being pushed by Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller to transfer responsibility for funding 50% of the state’s contribution to the Teachers Retirement and Pension Systems to the counties.  His proposal ignores the fiscal reality in the counties and casts aside the statutory responsibility the State of Maryland has to fund teachers’ retirement, as well as that of state employees, legislators, judges and others.  Senator Miller’s proposal, if enacted, will be a financial disaster for the counties, for the citizens, for active teachers and for retirees.  I and the PGPSRA Board take this very seriously and will contest Senator Miller’s proposal as vigorously as is humanly possible.

Your individual membership in PGPSRA and the Maryland Retired School Personnel Association is an asset.  If you have friends that have not joined, urge them to do so today.  Remind them that PGPSRA and MRSPA are the only organizations that represent their interests first and foremost!

Be sure to look at the Calendar.  Members always are welcome at our General Meetings.

Welcome Back,

Carl Lancaster
President
