Enews for April 2010

President’s Message for April 2010
Welcome to spring!  As I write this, we have a beautiful day in Prince George’s County.

You all need to know that the Legislative Session is going strong!  It looks as though we have been able to hold our cola to the zero point for this year….it’s not great news but the best we had hoped for in this economy.  We had a very effective meeting in Annapolis on St. Patrick’s Day and were able to listen to, and ask questions of, our legislators.  We thank, Jannette Wundrow for arranging and chairing this year’s tour, lunch and meeting.  Every contact we can make with our representatives is important to our retirement.

For some of our local members:  Bowie State University has a program to help local middle and high school students with math and science.  They are looking for tutors.  If you are interested contact Jaclin Warner (jwarner@bowiestate.edu) or Bertha Clay (bclay@bowiestate.edu).

We had a great General Meeting last week at La Fontaine Bleue.  Thanks to member John Sisson, we had a speaker, from the Attorney General’s office, who told us about scams out there that are targeting seniors in our society.  If you want to know more, or missed the meeting, we have a link to the Attorney General’s Office on our website:  www.pgpsra.org.

With that thought in mind, the Maryland Legislature is in session.   We have been to Annapolis to monitor legislation that impacts us as retirees.  So far, things are looking about as good as possible and we seem to be holding our own.  Do let us know if you have issues that you are concerned about.  You do want to check out the legislative information in Echoes and the MRSPA Newsletter.  Another source of information is the United Seniors of Maryland website (http://wwwunitedseniors.net)

Enjoy spring and all the sunshine!  It’s been a long time in coming.
